The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider debuted in 1955 as a Pininfarina-designed roadster, commissioned by U.S. importer Max Hoffman to bring Italian elegance to American buyers. It was Alfa Romeo’s first post-war convertible and quickly became a symbol of 1950s motoring glamour. Built on a shortened chassis of the Giulietta Sprint, it featured a 1.3L twin-cam inline-4 engine, a folding soft top, and roll-up windows—rare in convertibles of the era.
Produced from 1955 to 1965, it evolved from the early short-wheelbase 750 series models to the longer 101 series (1959–1965) with updated styling and improved interior. The Spider Veloce, introduced in 1956, featured dual Weber carburetors, higher compression (9.5:1), and 90–96 hp, making it the most desirable variant. Over 14,300 units were built, with the Veloce accounting for 2,796—a rare and collectible model.
How she drives:
The Giulietta Spider delivers a light and deeply engaging driving experience that is balanced yet nimble. Its 1,290 cc twin-cam inline-4 revs freely, producing a melodic exhaust note. Power is modest by modern standards, but the low curb weight (~860 kg) ensures lively performance: 0–60 mph in ~14.7 seconds and a top speed of 103 mph.
Independent front suspension with double wishbones and a live rear axle offer precise, communicative dynamics. It’s not a flat-cornering machine, but it inspires confidence with light, direct steering and predictable balance. Drum brakes all around (with finned fronts) were advanced for the era and remain effective for spirited touring. The four-speed manual shift is mechanical and satisfying, while the open cabin connects you fully to the road and surroundings.
