The Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto is one of the most recognisable and celebrated Italian sports cars ever built. Introduced in 1966 as the successor to the Giulietta and Giulia Spider models, it combined elegant Pininfarina styling, advanced engineering and open-top driving pleasure in a package that quickly became an automotive icon. Its distinctive rounded rear end, often referred to as the “boat-tail” design, remains one of the most beautiful shapes of the 1960s.
Designed by Pininfarina and powered by Alfa Romeo’s renowned twin-cam engine, the Spider was created for drivers who valued both performance and style. The model achieved worldwide fame through its appearance in the 1967 film The Graduate, where it became a symbol of freedom, youth and the romance of the open road. Although the name “Duetto” was only briefly associated with the car officially due to trademark complications, enthusiasts have continued to use it ever since when referring to the early rounded-tail Spider models.
The range evolved quickly, and in 1967 Alfa Romeo introduced the more powerful 1750 Spider Veloce. Equipped with a 1,779 cc twin-cam engine producing 118 horsepower, along with chassis improvements including a front anti-roll bar and hydraulic clutch, the Veloce added stronger performance whilst preserving the Spider’s light and engaging character. Today, both the original 1600 Duetto and the early Spider Veloce models are considered among the most desirable classic Alfa Romeos ever produced.
REQUEST AVAILABILITY OF THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER DUETTO
The Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto delivers one of the purest classic driving experiences available. Lightweight, responsive and wonderfully communicative, it rewards drivers with an immediate connection to both the road and the surrounding landscape. The free-revving twin-cam engine produces a distinctive Alfa Romeo soundtrack and encourages enthusiastic use of the gearbox, whilst the rear-wheel-drive layout provides excellent balance and agility.
The steering is light and precise, allowing the car to flow effortlessly through sweeping bends and mountain roads. Rather than relying on outright power, the Duetto excels through its balance, feedback and willingness to change direction. With the roof folded away, every journey becomes a sensory experience filled with the sounds, scents and scenery of the countryside.
Whether winding through the vineyards of Tuscany, exploring the coastal roads of Sicily or cruising beside the Mediterranean in southern France, the Duetto captures the spirit of classic Italian motoring better than almost any car of its era. It remains one of the defining Alfa Romeo sports cars and an enduring favourite among enthusiasts worldwide.
The Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto features on selected Nostalgic classic car tours, allowing guests to experience the roads and landscapes for which this iconic Italian roadster was originally created.
